Hedgehog, A Land Urchin

Today, I am walking down the track in a park when I saw Mr Spiky. Mr Spiky is a hedgehog from New Zealand unlike the Japanese and American counterparts. He might be a distant relative of SEGA, Sonic the hedgehog.  Most likely they were introduced into New Zealand to perform pest control job and they are not known to be native animal. It seems that they have some nasty diet for the job. Basically, they are generally insect eater but they can sometimes go quite extreme with diet such as frog, slug, snail and snake.

What is a hedgehog? “A hedgehog is any of the spiny mammals of the subfamily Erinaceinae and the order Erinaceomorpha. There are 17 species of hedgehog in five genera, found through parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, and New Zealand.”

Well, Mr Spiky is a nocturnal animal and it just happens that I am lucky enough to meet him that day. Mr Spiky is a kung fu master in rolling into a ball with spines armour facing the enemy. Occasionally, he would dash towards the enemy while transforming into a spines ball and ram the enemy. Probably, when he is very angry, he might pursue to do that a lot of times.

Of course, I am lucky today that Mr Spiky is willing to show us his rolling into a ball technique for me and I am sharing the photograph to you. Oh, no animal is hurt during this photography and that’s all, folks.
